A new Traditional Method Sparkling Wine is born in Alta Langa: our Chardonnay vineyard in Mango

Among the hills of Alta Langa, a project is coming to life that expresses the profound bond between territory, family, and great Piedmontese sparkling wines. We recently completed planting a new vineyard in Mango, on land owned by our family, cultivated for generations and lovingly tended in recent years by “Grandma Rosa.”

Seeing a new vineyard come to life is always a special experience. Each row represents a promise: that of a future Traditional Method Sparkling Wine capable of expressing the authentic character of the highest Langhe hills, dedicated to the production of great wines.

A new vineyard in the heart of Alta Langa

The new vineyard extends for approximately one hectare in one of the most fascinating wine-growing areas of Piedmont. Here, among the hills of the Alta Langa, the landscape changes: the altitude increases, the climate becomes cooler, and the conditions are ideal for the production of elegant Metodo Classico sparkling wines.

For this project, we chose to plant exclusively Chardonnay, one of the iconic grape varieties of the Alta Langa DOCG. The vines were planted using a modern mechanized system with a laser-guided tractor, a technology that allows for great precision and speed.

After the machine passes, each vine is still checked and arranged manually. Even with the help of technology, the quality of a great wine always comes from attention to detail.

Why the Alta Langa is perfect for a Traditional Method sparkling wine

In recent years, the Alta Langa has established itself as one of the most interesting areas for lovers of high-quality Italian sparkling wines. The altitude of over 500 meters above sea level guarantees ideal climatic conditions for the slow and complete ripening of the grapes.

During the summer, the sharp temperature variations between day and night help preserve acidity, aromas, and freshness. Constant ventilation also reduces vine stress and promotes balanced vineyard growth.

It is precisely these characteristics that make the Upper Langhe area so suited to the production of a refined, vertical, and elegant Traditional Method sparkling wine.

Two Chardonnay clones to enhance the terroir

The vineyard has different exposures and microzones. To best exploit these diverse conditions, we chose two different Chardonnay clones, capable of expressing complementary characteristics.

This choice will allow us, over the years, to achieve greater aromatic complexity and a richer and more balanced base wine, essential for the production of great Traditional Method sparkling wines.

In the world of wine, every detail counts: exposure, soil, altitude, and clonal selection contribute to building the final identity of the product.

The future of our Alta Langa DOCG Traditional Method

Our Valsellera Alta Langa DOCG Traditional Method will be born from this vineyard. A project that will require time, patience, and respect for natural rhythms.

Producing a great Traditional Method Spumante knows no shortcuts: it requires years of work in the vineyard and long aging in the cellar. After harvest and fermentation with oak aging, the wine will rest for at least 30 months in the bottle before reaching the glass.

It is precisely this long wait that gives the finest sparkling wines their complexity, finesse, and aromatic depth.

A unique panorama between the Langhe, Roero, and the Alps

There’s one element that makes this vineyard even more special: the view.
From here, the view opens onto the hills of the Langhe, the Roero, and the Alps on the horizon. A landscape that changes color with every season and reveals the most authentic soul of Piedmont wine.

Do happy vines really produce better grapes? Perhaps so. We certainly believe that a great wine is always born in a place capable of moving us.
The first tasting will require even more patience: see you in seven years.

FAQ – Traditional Method Sparkling Wine and Alta Langa

What is a Traditional Method Sparkling Wine?

The Traditional Method is a sparkling wine production method that involves a second fermentation directly in the bottle. It’s the same principle used for great, long-aged sparkling wines.

Why is Alta Langa ideal for sparkling wines?

The high altitude, cool climate, and marked temperature variations favor acidity, elegance, and aromatic complexity, essential characteristics for a great sparkling wine.

Which grapes are used for Alta Langa DOCG?

Mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the two grape varieties historically best suited to Traditional Method production in Piedmont. We are “in love” with Chardonnay and use it pure to create a “Blanc de Blancs.”

How long does it take to produce an Alta Langa Traditional Method?

The process is lengthy: between the growth of the vines, the first harvests, and bottle aging, it can take several years before being released for sale. After bottling for the second fermentation, called “tirage,” the wine must age on the lees in the bottle for at least 30 months.
